The announcement of the impending sale or closure of all Northern California locations of Cafe Gratitude as well as Gracias Madre feels like a huge blow to the vegan food scene. I have to admit, I was shocked and almost teared up when I read the news on Huffington Post on Tuesday.
As an avid reader of recipe books, I rarely find myself purchasing a book whose target audience is new to vegan cooking. Yet, macrobiotic vegan chef Christy Morgan’s gorgeous first book, Blissful Bites: Vegan Meals That Nourish Mind, Body and Planet, seems fit for anyone interested in making healthy, delicious, animal-free meals without a lot of effort.
When Lisa and I went travelling together in August—first to Portland, Oregon for the first-ever Vida Vegan Conference, and then to Oakland and finally San Francisco, California—one of the highlights of the trip involved a visit to Millennium for a five-course, heirloom tomato dinner, featuring local tomatoes that had been handpicked by Millennium’s very own staff.
Despite the limited audience the title might imply, The 100 Best Gluten-Free Recipes for Your Vegan Kitchen is far more than just another cookbook. Combining two powerful buzzwords—gluten-free and vegan—this softcover book is positively filled with a balance of both cooked and raw recipes that make use of whole foods and alternative ingredients to give a rounded approach in the kitchen.
With the onslaught of “get healthy” books and product advertisements these days, it’s no wonder we’re constantly scrutinizing our own and each other’s daily lifestyle choices. It often comes down to having the “perfect” diet—one that makes you glow, keeps you thin, gives you strength and energy, and is healthy and sustainable.
If you’re connected to the vegan food scene, you’ll know of the lovely Hannah Kaminsky. She published her first vegan cookbook during her teen years and has since created numerous e-books, developed a successful food blog and is sought after for her stunning food photographyand food styling skills.
